What is the history of American involment in the Middle East?

I am looking for someone to briefly explain U.S. involvement in the Middle East from 1980-present. I am not a student looking for homework, just a wife and mother that has not kept up with the details of what is going on over there. I don’t watch the news much because it is very disturbing, but I am bothered of late that I don’t know why the U.S. is involved in the war in Iraq. I am not interested in political opinions, just in facts. Links to websites explaining these details are welcome also. I haven’t had much luck in my searches. Thank you for your time!

      There is oil there and we want it. After the British relinquished control of the area (1950s/1960s), the Americans and Russians moved in to fill the void and filled the roll of exploitive foreign power. We manipulated governments to work in our best interest, and essentially supported dictatorships. This dicatatorships where either overthrown (Iran) or turned against us (Iraq). This is why they do not like us.
