Berserker . asked:

Are they going to bring it back or leave it on Iraq?
I think will be a big mistake if they leave all that armament on their hands, since the terrorist are close, I can’t imagine them having part of the armament sent to Iraq.

How good is your memory about Iraq war funding?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
war in iraq
single occupant asked:

Secretery Gates in today’s news asked 190 billion in additional war moneys in particular (from the AP story):

In remarks prepared for a Senate hearing, Gates says the extra money is necessary to buy vehicles that can protect troops against roadside bombs, refurbish equipment worn down by combat and consolidate U.S. bases in Iraq. A copy of the remarks was obtained by The Associated Press.

Now I have really been following this, and the last round of money that went was supposed to pay for these vehicles. In fact, it was a major deal in the bargain. And, supposedly, the vehicles were paid for, but the story went that it was hard for the manufacturer to produce them fast enough…

So, perhaps someone has been following this even more closely than I. Were these vehicles actually ever ordered, did a manufacturer actually start making them, and how many got to Iraq after the last round of funding?

THE One named Middle East CSR Leader!

Monday, February 15th, 2010
middle east
Cynthia asked:

UAE, October 28, 2009 THE One claimed the prestigious Corporate Social Responsibility Leader of the Year Award for the second year running at the Middle East Business Achievement Awards 2009 ceremony held at the Dubai International Convention Centre on Monday, October 26.

While MEBAA recognises leadership and outstanding achievement in a challenging new era for business, the highly regarded CSR Leader of the Year award honours a far-sighted organisation that shows continued support for corporate social responsibility, rising to the challenge of committing to CSR within reduced budgets and positively impacting the community in terms of the environment, employment, education and charitable work.

An elated Thomas Lundgren, founder and CEO (Chief Emotional Officer) of THE One, humbly accepted the accolade presented by 1984 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu.

“Winning this award is a great honour and just goes to show that what we are doing in terms of Socially Responsible Investment really works! I am so proud of my Tribe,” said Lundgren after the awards ceremony.

The home fashion brand outshone shortlisted companies Bayt.com and DLA Piper Middle East by demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the care of staff and customers, hiring of challenged employees, local volunteering initiatives, ethical sourcing and their big idea: Global Education through THE Onederworld – THE One’s Sustainable Village Community Programme.

Thomas personally kicked off the first Onederworld project in Kenya in August 2008 and has set his Tribe a goal of successfully running 99 stores by 2020 in order to adopt 99 villages, proving that CSR goes way beyond financial and legal obligations.

Just last week at the 6th CSR Summit, Lundgren collected yet another CSR accolade, walking off with the CSR Leadership Award which recognised the individual who best demonstrated the promotion of all aspects of corporate social responsibility, including environment, sustainability, community partnerships, education as well as poverty alienation.

THE END

On THE One:

Invented by Thomas Lundgren, THE One Total Home Experience opened its first store in Abu Dhabi in 1996. Today the brand is present in five countries across the Middle East. But THE One doesn’t believe the world needs another retailer; they believe we need a better world. That’s why, intent on being THE [responsible] One, the company aims to be both magical and meaningful: inspiring their fans with seasonal Home Fashion Collections that are ‘Always Different, Always Limited and Never Expensive’ while Changing the World Together. To this end, THE One supports a number of local and international charities and takes every opportunity to employ physically and mentally challenged individuals. You can find THE One Theatres in Bahrain (Manama), Jordan (Amman), Kuwait (Kuwait City), Qatar (Doha) and the United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah). Visit www.theoneplanet.com

How much is the war costing Iraq & how can they afford it?

Saturday, February 13th, 2010
war in iraq
The Wiz asked:

According to congressional records, the Iraq war is costing the US upwards of *two trillion dollars* & rising every second. Which makes me wonder how much, aside from thousands of lives, is the war costing the Iraqis? How can they afford it? Is their government richer than ours? What are your thoughts on this?
Are some of you guys implying that we are paying for their share of the war as well?
