We've still got contigencies in other parts of the world from previous wars and conflicts; we'll probably always be "in Iraq" during most of our lifetimes. Raising taxes on the rich wouldn't pay off the bailout because that would only account for a tiny portion of the total loan; we've got rich people for sure, but they're not that rich. If the plan works, experts say tax payers will probably pick up the tab on about $200 billion rather than the full $700 billion, after the market readjusts and investments banks gain ground again (that still a staggering number I know, but we're talking about one-third of the total bailout cost).
